“1917” dethrones “Star Wars” at the head of the North American box office

The war film “1917” took over the head of the North American box office this weekend, according to provisional figures published Sunday by the specialized company Exhibitor Relations, dethroning the last installment of the saga “Star Wars”.

The feature film by Sam Mendes, best drama film at the Golden Globes, made $ 36.5 million in revenues in the United States and Canada for its expanded theatrical release.

During its first two weeks of operation, it was only visible in a handful of rooms, before arriving on more than 3,000 screens on Friday.

“1917” traces the epic of two British soldiers who crossed the front lines in 1917 to go and carry a crucial message to 1,600 poilus to prevent them from falling into a trap.

In three weeks, the film grossed $ 39.2 million at the North American box office and $ 60.4 million worldwide, according to figures from the specialized site Box Office Mojo.

For its fourth week of operation, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” begins to stall and settles for second place with $ 15.1 million in revenue, bringing its total to 478.2 million since its release.

The ninth installment of the saga is just one breath away from the billion dollars sold, with 989.5 million to date.

In third place comes “Jumanji: Next Level”, which continues to seduce with $ 14 million in revenue from Friday to Sunday in North America.

In five weeks, the third episode of “Jumanji” garnered $ 257.1 million in the United States and Canada.

Behind this trio slip two novelties, tied with each $ 10 million in revenues in theaters.

“Like a Boss”, a muscular explanation among cosmetics entrepreneurs, is doing well despite being exhausted by the critics.

It is on a par with “The Way of Justice”, inspired by the true story of lawyer Bryan Stevenson, who enlisted in Alabama in the service of a black man unjustly convicted.

Released in a few cinemas at Christmas before its circulation was greatly strengthened on Friday, the film brought its total this weekend to $ 10.4 million in three weeks.

Here’s the rest of the Top 10:

6. “Daughters of Doctor March”: $ 7.6 million and $ 74 in three weeks

7. “Underwater”: for its first weekend, this film on an underwater crew stuck in deep water realizes 7 million dollars of receipts

8. “Frozen 2”: 5.8 million (459.3 in eight weeks)
