Drivers no longer required to pay fines before renewing car registration in Dubai

According to Dubai Police, drivers can now renew their car registration in Dubai without clearing their unpaid fines. Car owners previously had to ensure all traffic fines have been paid before they are able to renew their registration every year.

Dubai Police has made the decision after drivers had raised concerns that the renewal policy makes the “Exemplary Driver” discount unworkable.

Dubai Police chief, major general Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, stated: “The vehicle’s licence will be renewed regardless of the number of accumulated fines or any periods of confiscation imposed on the car, or the number of offences committed,” “This initiative is well thought out and has clear goals including helping members of the community, easing financial burdens, and encouraging drivers to remain safe behind the wheel, eventually reducing accidents and road deaths,” he added.

The initiative rewards drivers who maintain a clean record for 12 months with a 100% discount on their fines. Those who drive for 9 months without penalties will have their fines cut by 75%.

Drivers who maintain a clean record for 6 months will have their existing fines cut by 50% and by 25%  if they did not commit violations for 3 months.
