Today at the World Cup: Thursday, July 5

The World Cup action resumes on Friday with the quarter-finals but there’s still plenty going on at Russia 2018.

Each morning during the tournament we will bring you an overview of what’s coming up and though Thursday is a football-free day, here’s what you need to know…

England news, debate and analysis

We’ll have all the latest from the England camp from our reporters out in Russia as Gareth Southgate’s side turn their attention to Saturday’s last-eight showdown with Sweden – tune into Sky Sports News and follow our World Cup Daily LIVE! blog on skysports.com and the Sky Sports app.

Dele Alli (thigh), Jamie Vardy (groin) and Ashley Young (ankle) are all injury doubts ahead of the Samara clash.

Speaking to Sky Sports News from Russia, reporter Rob Dorsett said: “Alli is the most significant concern for Southgate but don’t expect the FA to issue a medical bulletin – England don’t want to help Sweden in any of their preparations.”

Former England striker Dean Ashton will be live on Sky Sports News from midday, to give his views on the country’s tournament so far and whether they can keep going all the way to an unprecedented final appearance.

Later on, former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton will also be in the studio at 9pm, looking back on Jordan Pickford’s super saves in Tuesday night’s penalty shootout win over Colombia.

They will both be giving their preferred line-ups for the quarter-final – and with those injury doubts, could this open the door for Danny Rose, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and even Marcus Rashford to replace Raheem Sterling?

What are the team doing?

As well as keeping their fitness concerns under wraps, England are set to train away from the cameras as they plot their path to the semi-finals.

England will train near their Repino base around 11am local time, barely 48 hours before they look to overcome Sweden and reach the last four for the first time in 28 years.

Reporter Rob Dorsett will be live from Russia throughout the morning on Sky Sports News.

What about Sweden?

We will be bringing you all you need to know on England’s next opponents, with Sky Sports News running a background introduction to some of the names you may be less familiar with.

We’ll also be at Sweden’s Gelendzhik training base to get their reaction to their quarter-final opponents, and the challenge they expect to face from England – and how they plan to spring a surprise.

Anything else happening?

Brazil, Belgium, France and Uruguay will hold news conferences ahead of their respective quarter-final meetings on Friday.

Will Tite respond to recent criticism of Neymar’s ‘playacting’? Will Edinson Cavani be fit for Uruguay after suffering a calf injury against Portugal? And could Roberto Martinez be tempted to start Marouane Fellaini?
