Families invited to learn to paint pottery at Qasr Al Muwaiji, Al Ain

Organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, DCT Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Muwaiji’s monthly Family Day Workshop series will return for its fourth instalment on Friday, 22nd June from 5pm until 7pm.

Open to all and free of charge, the interactive creative session will invite visitors to learn to paint pottery and explore the historic significance of ceramic painting to Emirati heritage.

Participants in the workshop will get a chance to learn more about the history of the craft and decorate, colour, and paint their chosen pieces of pottery.

The Family Day Workshop is held once a month to explore various topics through creative and artistic mediums. The series also aims to engage families and children in exploring the history and culture of the UAE, while raising awareness and promoting Emirati heritage.

Regarded as one of the oldest handicraft trades in the UAE, pottery is an integral part of Emirati history with pottery still widely displayed and sold at roadside bazaars in the UAE to this day.

The historic Qasr Al Muwaiji is located in the centre of Al Ain and is the birthplace of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The palace was originally used as a diwan (a council or seat of governance) and as a place for the community to congregate. Built in the early years of the 20th Century, it has been restored to its former glory and reopened to the public as a museum and permanent exhibit.

Visitors today can explore the history of the palace, its significance as a family home and as a place of governance and its role as part of the Al Ain community.
