‘Massive kettling operation’ on fifth weekend of Paris protests

Updates on Paris protests:

• Fifth successive weekend of “yellow vest” protests in Paris
• Demonstrators are calling for a drop in the cost of living
• French president seeks to defuse the situation with a new minimum wage
• More than 1,700 people were arrested across France last weekend

Police scuffled with protesters outside Paris’s opera house, and fired tear gas across the Champs-Elysees.  Around 33,500 protesters were across France at midday – interior ministry, the number is less than half that of a week ago, when 77,000 were counted at the same point.
