Dubai Police Address 10-Year-Old’s Complaint About His Father’s Cruelty

Dubai Police have announced that communication channels with the General Department of Human Rights are always open for reporting any violations of children’s rights, in accordance with the UAE’s ‘Wadeema’ law concerning child rights and protection. They stress the importance of quickly reporting any incidents of violence or abuse against children to ensure prompt intervention and necessary support. Reports can be made confidentially via the smart app, the official website, or by calling 901. Additionally, individuals can visit the Child Oasis at the Dubai Police headquarters in Al Twar.

This announcement follows a response from the Child and Women Protection Department in the General Department of Human Rights regarding a report made by a 10-year-old boy, who disclosed his father’s excessive cruelty, including severe beatings that left visible bruises on his body. The boy had made multiple attempts to hide these injuries from his classmates.

Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Ali Al Matrooshi, Director of the Child and Women Protection Department, reported that a 10-year-old child, referred to as “A. A.,” utilized the protection service in the Dubai Police smart app to disclose his father’s excessive cruelty. Unlike his younger siblings, he endured this abuse in isolation, which left him unaware of the behaviors that triggered his father’s harsh treatment. This included discouraging words and physical abuse, resulting in visible marks on his body.

Al Matrooshi mentioned that the child’s school administration noticed his bruises and a decline in academic performance, which led them to encourage the child to report the situation through the Dubai Police smart app.

He further explained, “The child was too afraid to speak up for fear of punishment. However, the school social worker observed the scattered bruises and the paleness of his face. By establishing a trusting relationship, the social worker encouraged him to seek help from Dubai Police to stop his father’s cruel treatment.”

Al Matrooshi stated, “We called in the child’s father, who admitted he did not intend to harm his son. However, as the eldest child in his family, he adopted the same parenting style he experienced growing up, believing it would make his son strong and resilient. Unfortunately, this resulted in harsh disciplinary measures, including physical punishment, which left visible bruises. Consequently, the child’s academic performance declined, and he became increasingly isolated from his peers.”

He emphasized that the specialized Child and Women Protection Department team spoke with the father, who committed to changing his approach. “The department will take appropriate legal actions, making it clear that this parenting method is entirely unacceptable and punishable by law”, Al Matrooshi added.

He also reaffirmed that Dubai Police will continue to provide ongoing support for the child, ensuring regular communication and offering tailored social and psychological counseling in cooperation with partners.
