The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court sentenced four suspects in the case of a Khaleeji woman who stole AED 20 million from a bank to spend it on a man who had promised to marry her to.
The court sentenced the first defendant, a GCC woman, to seven years in prison and a fine of AED 20,500,000. The second defendant was sentenced to six months in prison and fined AED 20,000 and ordered to pay AED 2,230,000 -along with the first defendant- to the bank which they stole from.
The court also sentenced the third defendant to six months in prison and a fine of AED 20,000 and ordered him to pay back AED 1,200,000 to the bank. The court charged the first defendant with paying back AED 9,517,553 to the bank.
The fourth defendant, an Arab national, was sentenced to three years imprisonment, a fine AED 300,000 and deportation from the country.
Police investigations revealed that the woman used her position at work and seized millions of dirhams from the bank. Prosecutors stated that the police had recovered part of the stolen cash by seizing some gifts.
Earlier in the court, the woman admitted to embezzling the funds from her workplace during the period from August 2016 to April 2017. She regretted committing the crime saying that she made a big mistake. The woman also said that she was helping her fiancé who had asked her for money because of a personal crisis. She also said that the men had promised her to pay back the money. However, the man denied asking her for the money, and claimed that the woman gave it to him on her own free will.
