As part of the Dubai Police’s three-day campaign organized with partners in celebration of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26, the General Department of Anti-Narcotics has launched an initiative to share inspiring stories of recovering addicts who succeeded in turning over a new leaf and regaining the stability in their lives.
The initiative brought to light cases of overcoming drug addiction that the Hemeya International Centre has been assisting in completing people’s treatments and recovering from their addictions.
According to the Director of the General Department of Anti-Narcotics at Dubai Police, Brigadier Eid Muhammad Thani Hareb, one of the heroes has recovered from his drug addiction and found happiness in marriage and having a family after nine years of suffering under the influence of the narcotic substance.
Unfortunate Beginnings at 19
“After his parents’ death, the young man started using drugs at the age of 19, incited by his two addicted brothers, who both turned out to be listed in the periodic drug testing and have records of use and possession of drugs. All three were arrested in 2014. The youngest was first detained with the other two at that time. He was deeply reflected on himself, was given a second chance and only got listed in the periodic testing.” Brig Hareb added.
“However, he did not commit for long and started using all sorts of substances again and gained ten criminal records of use and possession over the years,” Brig Hareb continued.
Safe Embrace
Director of the General Department of Anti-Narcotics elaborated: “The young man spent nine painful years of his life seeking treatment, relapsing, and getting arrested for drug abuse and possession. Yet, he did not give up hope in himself and continuously asked for rehabilitation and psychological support over and over again at the Hemaya International Centre “.
“Every time he felt vulnerable and feared relapsing, he sheltered himself in the support system of the Hemaya International Center without hesitation, believing that Dubai Police doors are always open to whoever has the will to recover. The young man witnessed a warm welcome in every visit and received an understating and attentive ear to his health and psychological conditions. He found nothing there but wholehearted support to recover from his addiction,” Brig Hareb added.
Optimism and Belief
By 2019, the young man showed a strong commitment and self-discipline over the entire legal term of the periodic drug testing. Full of gratitude, he visited the Centre to express his appreciation for the considerable support and assistance he has received during his treatment. He also volunteered to help other addicts shake off the narcotic chains from their lives.
Full of optimism and belief in the system’s efficiency in rescuing his beloveds, the young man began from his household. He encouraged his friends and family members to seek help and commit to the testing, especially after his big sister started recently using drugs after getting addicted to prescribed medication.
He went to the greater length to help the police arrest many drug dealers promoting narcotics among the youth.
New Start
“To support and empower this young man to realize his dreams and start a new phase in his life, the Hemaya International Center responded to his request to issue a certificate of completion of the periodic testing after he found a suitable job to get his life straight and take the step of marriage and stability that he had always wanted,”
“We are glad that he never stopped communicating with the specialists at the Centre and considered them his second family”, Brig Hareb concluded.
