Dubai: Did the lower speeds limits reduce accidents on Emirates and MBZ roads?

Maj. Gen. Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police Operations, stated that accidents were lowered by 20 per cent and 13% reduction of deaths have occurred on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed and Emirates streets since the implementation of the decision to reduce the maximum speed from 120 km / h to 110 km in 2017, and that comparisons were made between accidents and deaths on the streets from 15 October 2017 to 10 March 2018 and the same period before the application year and positive results of the reduction decision were concluded, which confirms the decision’s necessity.

The decision aims primarily to achieve the safety of road users and reduce accidents and deaths to the lowest levels, a priority for the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai police.

Al Zafin also said in a telephone interview with Rashid Al-Kharji via Noor Dubai that there is no intention to reduce the speeds to less than the currently applied because it is a high-speed highway and meets international standards. For example, in the United States, main streets do not exceed 110 km / h, noting that it was possible to keep speed as it is and reduce the margin of speed, but the presence of a uniform margin of speed in all Emirates called to keep the margin and reduce the speed after informing drivers, stressing that speeding is the most important cause of accidents.
According to the General, the decision to modify the speeds on the streets in Dubai is based on cooperation between the Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai and on the basis of studies and comparisons, and that it can be monitored again after a year of application, and that it is subject to experience, monitoring and analysis of output, All to protect road users.
