WhatsApp testing Instagram-like rings around profile pictures to indicate status update

WhatsApp is constantly working on adding new features to its platform, even if that means borrowing some popular features from other social media apps. One such feature that is currently under development is the ability to see status updates from within the chat box itself.

For this, WhatsApp seems to have generously taken inspiration from its Meta siblings like Facebook and Instagram. On Instagram in particular, a contact in the chat box has a circle around their display picture if there’s a status update from them that hasn’t been viewed.

Similarly, on WhatsApp, contacts will now have a green circle around their profile picture in the chat box. Clicking on this will directly take the user to the status update. The feature was spotted by WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo.

Like on Instagram, clicking on the chat box takes you to the chat, whereas clicking on the profile picture shows you the status update by the contact.

It remains unclear when the feature will be rolled out, as it is still under development. Given that the feature is already popular on other Meta apps, it is unlikely that WhatsApp will shelve this midway.

WhatsApp has also been working on a new caption view for users while sharing media and also a redesigned interface for status updates which will let users decide the audience for their statuses.
