Dubai Police confiscates More than 9,000 Bicycles in Ten Months

The Dubai Traffic Police confiscated 9,886 bicycles over the past ten months for violating traffic laws and regulations and endangering the lives of road users.

Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of the General Directorate of Traffic Police, said they had intensified their traffic patrols across the jurisdiction areas of Deira and Bur Dubai to reduce deaths, disabilities and injuries caused by bicycle-related accidents.

“Bicycle-related accidents can be fatal, especially when cyclists cycle in the opposing streams of traffic or recklessly cross streets over traffic islands,” he explained.

Brig. Al Mazroui further added that some cyclists violate traffic laws and endanger their lives and others by cycling on pavements in commercial markets and narrow alleys.

“Cycling safety options are minimal, so a simple collision could have serious consequences. Therefore, the onus is on cyclists to protect their lives by adhering to traffic laws and regulations that are put in place to ensure their safety and preserve the lives of all road users,” he added.

Brig. Al Mazroui urged cyclists to wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet and a high visibility vest, always ride in the same directions as other vehicles and never ride against traffic. He also urged them to yield to pedestrians, stop at red lights, be especially careful at intersections, and always walk their bicycles across a busy intersection using crosswalks and following traffic signals.
