The Abu Dhabi Misdemeanors Court issued judgments in three different traffic cases. Five youths were convicted of reckless and irresponsible driving on the highway, showing off their cars in neighborhoods, endangering their lives and the lives of road users, in addition to causing damage to public roads.
The sentences rendered against the convicts include imprisonment for six months for each of them, later replaced with community service for a period of three months, and obligate the accused to pay fines totaling 50,000 dirhams, in addition to suspending the driving licenses of each of them for a period of six months, and confiscating their cars to be sold in a public auction in favor of restoration the public roads damages by the bad conduct of the defendants.
On its part; the Public Prosecution Office commended the role of the Abu Dhabi Police General Department in arresting and apprehending the accused, emphasizing that showboating in public streets is one of the most irresponsible behaviors conducted by young men, which poses a threat to their lives and the lives of other road users. The prosecution office calls upon educational and community authorities to cooperate with the concerned authorities and intensify awareness campaigns to limit irresponsible behaviors on the roads and to lessen any acts that may endanger their lives and the lives of others.
According to article 348 of the Federal Penal Code “Any person who willfully commits an act that would endanger the life, health, security or freedoms of people shall be punished by imprisonment and a fine or one of these two penalties,” explained the office.
In the details of the three cases; the Public Prosecution in Abu Dhabi had referred the defendants to the Misdemeanors Court on charges of recklessly and irresponsibly driving cars on the highway without having plate numbers thereon, showboating, drifting, causing disturbance and nuisance in residential neighborhoods, endangering their lives and the lives of road users, and inflicting damages to the road surface and public properties.
On its part, the court convicted the accused persons of the charges assigned to them, and issued sentences against them that include imprisonment for a period of six months and fines in addition to the confiscation of the cars used in the offences and the suspension of their driving licenses for a period of six months.
