Dubai Police launches ‘anti-begging’ campaign

The Dubai Police has launched today, on Thursday, Anti-begging campaign ahead of Ramadan.

Launched in cooperation with the government and local authorities, the anti-begging campaign lasts throughout the holy month, and is aimed at promoting community awareness on the risks of the begging phenomenon. It also maintains security and stability of society, and clamps down on beggars in public places especially during Ramadan.
Brigadier Jamal Salem Al Jallaf, Director of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Dubai Police, said that over the last three years the campaign arrested 842 beggars of different nationalities.

“Begging is a negative phenomenon as beggars take advantage of people’s generosity, especially during Ramadan. “The police have been exerting efforts to fight this phenomenon with intensified efforts and cooperation from the department of Islamic Affairs, general directorate of residency and foreign affairs (GDRFA) and the Dubai Municipality”, he added.

Colonel Ali Salem, Director of the Infiltrators Department at the Criminal Investigations Department of Dubai Police, said that registered charities do not hesitate to help needy citizens and residents alike. “One will get aid if their need is proven. Individuals begging in public places and streets is completely unacceptable and punishable by law.”

He reminded all citizens and residents not to be sympathetic with beggars but donate to charities instead. He also urged the public to report beggars on the toll-free number 901, or through the ’Police Eye’ service, or via E-Crime platform- www.ecrime.ae

It is worth noting that Begging is a punishable offence as per the Penal Code of the UAE.
