Abu Dhabi toll system: how fines will work

Drivers of cars with vehicle licences registered to Abu Dhabi will not be immediately fined if they pass beneath a toll without having enough credit in their account.

Ibrahim Al Hammoudi, acting director at the Department of Transport, told Arabic news channel Oloum Al Dar, that any unpaid tolls or fines would be charged to the motorist when renewing their vehicle licence instead.

The emirate’s toll system will come into force on Tuesday, October 12.

Drivers will be charged Dh4 during the peak period of 7am to 9am and 5pm to 7pm, Saturday to Thursday. A Dh2 off-peak fee will be charged outside of these times, as well as on Fridays and public holidays. The maximum daily charge is capped at Dh16.

All vehicles with licences registered to Abu Dhabi before October 15, 2019, will automatically be signed up to the payment system. Motorists with vehicles registered in Abu Dhabi after that date, will have to manually signed up to the scheme at a cost of Dh100.

A grace period of 10 working days is in place for cars registered outside of Abu Dhabi who pass beneath the toll without having signed up. After that period, unregistered cars will be fined Dh100 for the first day, Dh200 for the second day and Dh400 for a third day, up to a maximum of Dh10,000.
