H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, attended today the official opening of the 23rd Zayed Sports Tournament organised annually at the Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel under the umbrella of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council.
The sports function sees the participation of more than 3,000 athletes, 68 teams,19 individual and team sports and more than 25 foreign teams.
The ceremony was attended by Lt. General Mohammed Hilal Al Kaabi, Chairman of the Supreme Organising Committee of the Championship and a number of senior sports and youth figures in the country.
Sheikh Mansour hailed the significant support provided by the UAE leadership for the sports sector and their keenness on enhancing community engagement in the sports activities.
He noted that this year’s tournament coincides with the Year of Tolerance and mirrors the deeply rooted tolerant values of Emiratis, with the championship witnessing the participation of sports teams of various nationalities.
He praised the efforts of the organisers and wished the participants best of luck and success.
The annual tournament is a tribute to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and honours his keen sportsmanship and legacy of engaging communities.
It features 16 different sporting activities, including basketball, football, swimming, judo, jiu-jitsu, muay thai, chess, volleyball and gymnastics.
