Woman gets fined, deported for drug abuse in UAE

The Federal Supreme Court rejected a woman’s appeal against a fine and deportation sentence for the use of a controlled drug for treatment. The woman also provided a prescription that did not meet the required legal requirements, since it was issued outside the UAE, by doctors who are not licensed.

Case details reveal that the Public Prosecution had referred the woman to trial on charges of drug abuse (Tramadol). The first instance court sentenced the defendant to a 2000 dirham fine and deportation, and the ruling was upheld by the Court of Appeal.

The accused denied the charges, and appealed before the Federal Supreme Court, explaining that the sentence violated the right of defense, the woman also insisted on being subject to forensic tests, to prove that her drug use was for the purpose of treatment according to prescription.
