The medical team at one of the facilities of Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), succeeded in saving the life of a 4-year-old Emirati boy by removing the remains of a pencil that got in his eye in a complex surgery that lasted more than 4 and a half hours. The remains of the pen were situated in the eyeball and had reached a part of the brain, but the case was treated successfully.
Dr. Habibullah Eatadmadi, head of the ophthalmology department, stated: “when we received the child, his right eye was swollen, and he immediately underwent CT scans and MRI scans to determine the size of the object and where it was. After entering the operating room, a small cosmetic hole was made in the eyelid, 5 mm between the bone and the eye. During the procedure and when the opening was performed, we were surprised that a large amount of pus was inside the eye. A part of it had reached the brain. The pencil residue was removed. and the puss was a result of a bacterial infection, which is expected since the pencil is an external object, it is likely to be contaminated which it was. Thankfully, and with the experience of the medical team, the child was saved from near death experience ”
He explained that the role played by neurologists was very important; as the remnants of the pencil continued to cause the accumulation of pus and swelling of the brain, which required the presence of nerve surgeons during the operation, which helped to get rid of the pus in the brain, pointing out that the child underwent a post-surgical treatment program that lasted Eight weeks, during which antibiotics and intravenous anticonvulsants were given before he was completely healed and discharged from the hospital. He pointed out that what happened to the child did not cause any harm to his eyes after he was examined later.
