Abu Dhabi: Arab woman loses her life due to medical negligence

The Abu Dhabi Court of Appeal considered the case of an Arab woman who lost her life due to an alleged medical error.

Details of the case indicate that the deceased woman went to the ER of a private hospital -the third defendant-, with her sponsor -the first defendant-, and after the necessary medical procedures for having a high blood pressure, the doctor -the second defendant- asked her to do an Electrocardiography (ECG) and to be admitted to the hospital stay, but the deceased refused that and insisted to be discharged from the hospital.

The woman signed a written consent stating that she refused to do the tests, according to the documents in the lawsuit, it was also stated that before she went to the hospital, she was given a cortisone injection. It was also stated in the forensic report that the cause of her death was a stroke because of high blood pressure.

The court sentenced the first defendant to four months in prison and a fine of 50,000 dirhams the charge of manslaughter and ordered the suspension of the sentence for three years.

The doctor was also convicted and sentenced to five months in prison and fined 100,000 dirhams for manslaughter. The private hospital was convicted and charged with a fine of 300,000 dirhams, the defendants were also sentenced to paying a combined sum of 200,000 dirhams to the heirs of the victim.
