Abu Dhabi: Briton Matthew Hedges gets life term after spy charge

The Abu Dhabi Federal Appeal Court sentenced the British defendant ‘Matthew Hedges’ to life in prison after he pleaded guilty before the court on charges brought against him by the Public Prosecutor’s Office on the basis of legal evidence resulting from judicial investigations. The defendant was on trial for charges of spying and seeking confidential information for the benefit of a foreign country, aiming to endanger the UAE’s economic, political, and military position.

The UAE’s Attorney General, Dr Hamad Al Shamsi has confirmed that the sentence is not final and the defendant has the right to appeal to the Federal Supreme Court.
