Eyes to the sky: You could see a meteor shower in Dubai this month

One of the best and most visible meteor showers of the year will fall on August 12…

Get excited space fans, there’s a stunning meteor shower expected in Dubai later this month.

The Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the most reliable and visible meteor showers of the year, and it’s expected on Sunday August 12. Although you may be able to see it on Saturday night, astronomers are predicting Sunday will be the strongest visibility.

This year during peak, people should see about 60 to 70 meteors per hour, but in outburst years (such as in 2016) the rate can be between 150 and 200 meteors an hour.

Last year, the meteor shower was more difficult to see, as the moon was three quarters full. However this year should be an almost moonless night, making it one of the best meteor showers of the year.

So, we’re hopeful to get ourselves a gram-worthy shot.

The Dubai Astronomy group will be hosting a viewing at Al Quadra desert on Sunday August 12pm. From 10pm until the early hours, tickets to the viewing party are priced at Dhs150 for adults and Dhs70 for children. Included in the ticket is an educational presentation about the event, both telescopic and naked eye observation, a video show and the chance to ask your questions to the experts.
