Abu Dhabi: Celebrity arrested for posting an abusive video on social media

Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution has ordered the arrest of a prominent social media celebrity after he posted an abusive video on “Instagram”, in which he is accused of insulting a well known female celebrity.

Attorney Abeer Dahmani, who is representing the victim, stated that her client is one of the well known public figures in the co and is country, known by the name “Kashuna”. She has many fans and followers on social networking sites. On the occasion of allowing women to drive in Saudi Arabia, my client participated as the first Emirati woman to drive a car in Saudi Arabia with a large number of celebrities from several countries spreading this news in newspapers, media and social media apps.

“A few days later, my client was surprised by the fact that the accused, another social media celebrity, recorded a video and posted it on Instagram, in which he insulted my client using the worst names, compromising her reputation”.

Lawyer Abeer Dahmani pointed out that her client has suffered significant emotional damage following the incident, as a large number of her followers on the social networking sites kept sending her these videos.

She also referred  to Article 20 of Decree-Law No. 5 of 2012 on Combating Cyber Crimes, which states that “Any person who insults others or has attributed to another an incident that may make him subject to punishment or contempt by others by using an electronic site shall be punished by imprisonment or a fine of not less than AED 250,000 and not exceeding AED 500,000. Insult or slander against public employees is considered an aggravating circumstance of the crime”.
