105 Bicycle racks set up by Abu Dhabi Municipality

The move follows Municipality’s study of eyesores of the city and the casual parking of bicycles

The Abu Dhabi City Municipality announced that it has nearly completed 40% of Bike Racks Project in Abu Dhabi Island. The project was undertaken in response to public requests for providing service facilities. It also follows a study by Municipality on eyesores marring the urban appearance of the city and the random parking of bicycles in public facilities, sidewalks and streetlights distorting the urban landscape of the city & posing a danger to pedestrians.

The project is part of the Urban Planning Department & Municipalities efforts of protecting the city’s general appearance from all types of eyesores, and providing facilities that help cyclists find civilised bicycle-parking racks. Achieving people happiness is a part of the Municipality’s strategic plans through quality projects that add to the infrastructure of the city and fulfil the needs of decent living.

The concerned teams of the Municipality have identified the major causes of the negative practice of parking bicycles that distorts the urban appearance of the city; which is the lack of bicycle-parking racks in several areas of Abu Dhabi Island. As a result, cyclists tend to park their bicycles randomly anywhere.

The Municipality has proposed a plan to provide alternative solutions through installing bicycle racks in Sector West 7 -22/15 and several pedestrian bridges with the aim of providing 275 bicycle racks in total. 105 bike racks were installed so far (38.18%), each rack can hold two bicycles. The Municipality is working on the project, which is expected to be completed by August 2018.

The Municipality has a plan to develop various sectors in Abu Dhabi Island in line with the Urban Streets Design Manual eases the movement of pedestrians, bicycles & vehicles. It will also provide sufficient space for bike racks in places such as Sheikh Zayed Street & Sector East 6, where street and spaces were redesigned according to the Urban Streets Design Manual.

The Abu Dhabi City Municipality is carrying out the bicycle racks project to cover most tourist & recreational areas to bring the total number to as much as 550 biking racks. It is part of efforts aimed to provide services that delight the community & help maintain the urban appearance of the city and address the requirements of public safety & security.
