Dr. Farida Al Hosani, the spokesperson for the health sector in the UAE:
• During this period, the media and international organizations have proclaimed the detection of a new Coronavirus mutant known as “Omicron”. As of now, the first case detected globally was on November 12, and it was announced on November 26 as a “worrisome” mutant.
• Through global monitoring, it was reported that the mutant appeared first in South Africa, after which cases of the same mutant were detected in a number of countries, including cases related to travel.
• The World Health Organization reported that major genetic mutations might affect the characteristics of the virus and the speed of its spread more than the previous mutations. This report is based on preliminary information that requires further research and investigation.
• The competent authorities follow up on all the information related to the mutant to take the necessary measures.
• The Ministry of Health announces the approval of the booster dose for all categories aged 18 years and above, for those who received the two main doses of the Pfizer BioNTech and Sputnik vaccine 6 months after the second dose.
• There is a changing group of the population, which are the residents and holders of new work visas. We will follow up and ensure that they receive the COVID-19 vaccine according to the medical procedures approved in the UAE.
• We would like to clarify that the percentage of the inoculated people does not mean that everyone is vaccinated, as the number of the population changes with time, and this percentage indicates the vaccination of most of the targeted groups.
• There is a percentage of children and school students who have not yet received the vaccine and are being vaccinated. A tiny percentage of the population is excluded from the vaccine for medical reasons.
