Lionel Messi’s Photo with Copa America Trophy Breaks Instagram Record

Argentina and Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has inadvertently broken a record thanks to his image holding the Copa America trophy.

Largely regarded as the best football player to ever grace a football pitch, international silverware was the only thing keeping Messi from silencing his critics.

That all changed on Sunday, July 11 as Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 to win the Copa America final in a feat which Messi will not forget for a long time for obvious reasons.

Messi took to his Instagram to share an image of himself with the trophy and that specific photo now has 19 million likes, which is a record for a sports-related post.

No other post in the world of sports has received that many likes, which are growing by the day.

To put things to perspective, Lebron James’s post mourning the late Kobe Bryant garnered 15.5 million likes, while Messi’s own post where he mourned the late Diego Maradona in November 2020 garnered 16.4 million likes.

It is kind to note that the 19 million likes on Messi’s post is not the most of any Instagram post but it has certainly broken the record of a post related purely to sports.
