“TikTok” is the most downloaded app worldwide in 2020

The popular Mobile app analytics firm App Annie has released its annual report on mobile app trends of 2020. The report reveals that TikTok has managed to surpass Facebook to become the most downloaded app worldwide. TikTok has jumped three positions to become the most-downloaded app and the report also reveals that the app might break into 1 billion monthly active users by next year.

On the other hand, Facebook and its other apps still dominate the top five positions in the list. The second, third and fifth positions are captured by Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram respectively. The video conferencing app Zoom is the fourth most downloaded app in the world.

The report also suggests that the ongoing pandemic situation has increased our mobile usage by two to three years. The report also mentions that the time spent on mobile devices was one of the biggest areas of growth this year. The biggest app category that witnessed growth in the time spent include business apps.

The data of downloads and consumer spend is a result of a combination of Android and iOS till November 2020. The report also highlights that the growth in the downloads of TikTok can be attributed to content-hungry consumers who flocked to the app to create, socialise and stay entertained.

The app also saw an increase in cross-app usage with major video streaming players like Netflix, indicating that TikTok is not only blurring the lines between social and streaming but is a force to be reckoned with in the streaming world. The other apps in the list of most downloaded apps include Facebook Messenger, Google Meet, Snapchat, Telegram and Like.
