ADP urges swimmers to follow safety instructions after 7 recorded drownings

The Abu Dhabi Police, ADP, has warned the public about not following safety instructions and swimming carelessly, while highlighting that drowning accidents can occur in a matter of minutes under such circumstances.

The ADP noted that seven people drowned in Abu Dhabi this year, and called upon swimmers to be careful and follow safety advice to avoid such accidents.

Colonel Mohammed Ibrahim Al Ameri, Director of the Emergencies and General Safety Directorate of the Central Operations Sector, said that swimming without the required skills could expose the lives of swimmers to danger and lead to death, while calling upon the public to follow general safety instructions and always swim with another person to avoid potential risks.

He added that promoting a culture of awareness and following instructions is the first step to avoiding drowning, while highlighting the efforts of the ADP and other relevant authorities in implementing awareness programmes and campaigns that seek to promote safety.

Al Ameri pointed out that being careless while swimming could lead to exhaustion, especially after swimming long distances. He also cited other reasons, such as miscalculating distances, not following safety requirements, or swimming during poor weather conditions.

He highlighted the importance of not allowing children to swim alone in swimming pools and beaches, as well as raising their awareness about dangers, monitoring them, installing fences around swimming pools, as well as non-slip floors, wearing proper swimming equipment, supplying children with floaters and life-saving tools, and closing doors that lead to swimming pools.
