{"id":63976,"date":"2026-04-25T12:07:49","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T08:07:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uaebarq.ae\/en\/?p=63976"},"modified":"2026-04-25T12:07:52","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T08:07:52","slug":"wmo-el-nino-expected-to-develop-from-mid-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uaebarq.ae\/en\/2026\/04\/25\/wmo-el-nino-expected-to-develop-from-mid-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"WMO: El Ni\u00f1o expected to develop from mid-2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An El Ni\u00f1o event is expected to develop from mid-2026, impacting global temperature and rainfall patterns, according to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest Global Seasonal Climate Update from WMO signals a clear shift in the Equatorial Pacific: sea-surface temperatures are rising rapidly, pointing to a likely return of El Ni\u00f1o conditions as early as May\u2013July 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forecasts indicate there is a \u201cnearly global dominance of above-normal land surface temperatures\u201d in the upcoming three-month period, and regional variations in rainfall patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter a period of neutral conditions at the start of the year, climate models are now strongly aligned, and there is high confidence in the onset of El Ni\u00f1o, followed by further intensification in the months that follow,\u201d said Wilfran Moufouma Okia, Chief of Climate Prediction at WMO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cModels indicate that this may be a strong event \u2013 but the so-called spring predictability barrier is a challenge for the certainty of forecasts at this time of year. Forecast confidence generally improves after April,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o is characterized by a warming of ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern Equatorial Pacific.
