The Money Laundering Court at the Dubai\nCourts convicted a 30-member gang and seven companies for laundering money and\nembezzling AED32 million in an online scam targeting individuals and companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 30 members of the gang were sentenced to a\ncombined total of 96 years of imprisonment. They will be deported from the\ncountry after serving their sentence. The Court ordered the defendants to\njointly pay a fine of over AED32 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Court also ordered the confiscation of\ncomputers and phones used in the crime. Furthermore, it imposed a combined\ntotal fine of AED700,000 on the seven companies involved in the case. The court\nmay also confiscate funds or assets belonging to the defendants to cover the\nfine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, Dubai Public Prosecution referred\nthe 30 individuals and seven companies to the Money Laundering Court at the Dubai\nCourts on the charge of money laundering and running an AED32 million online\nscam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Counselor Ismail Madani, Senior Advocate\nGeneral and Head of Public Funds Prosecution, stated that the gang stole the money\nby sending 118,000 phishing emails to victims, falsely impersonating banks and\nfinancial institutions with whom the victims had business relationships. These\nphishing emails requested the victims to transfer payments to the defendants’\naccounts. Later, the defendants cashed out the money or transferred it to other\naccounts, while other defendants purchased used cars to conceal the illicit\nsource of the funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Counselor Ismail Madani further stated that\nUAE authorities spare no effort in combating such criminal activity and are\nfully committed to fighting money laundering, online crimes, and scams that can\nhave a potentially detrimental impact on the national economy.
