The Dubai Police has issued a safety\nadvisory on the dangers of accidentally inhaling carbon monoxide (CO), which\ncan be produced by burning fuel in appliances such as stoves, ovens,\nfireplaces, and heating systems.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Butti Ahmed bin Darwish Al Falasi,\ndirector of the Security Awareness Department in the General Department of\nCommunity Happiness at Dubai Police, explained that carbon monoxide (CO)\nexposures and poisonings occur more often during summer and winter seasons due\nto the lack of awareness and wrong practices of some individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“In summer, the most common way of getting carbon\nmonoxide poisoning is when the AC of an automobile is on while it’s idle in a\nclosed garage or space without proper ventilation. During the energy-making process,\nthe vehicle pulls in the air mixed with CO through the AC vents. Then, the\nautomobile’s occupants accidentally inhale carbon monoxide and become weak due\nto lack of oxygen in their bodies, eventually dying,” Al Falasi continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added, “Meanwhile, carbon\nmonoxide poisoning occurs in winter as people are more likely to use gas\nfurnaces and heating appliances seeking warmth in closed places or structures\nwith minimal airflow. Carbon monoxide is odourless, so it goes undetected by\nhumans and silently kills them.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Awareness is Key<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Al Falasi reaffirmed the keenness of\nDubai Police to raise awareness and education every year through ‘The Silent\nKiller’ campaign on CO poisoning and related safety measures, such as ensuring\nproper ventilation of closed places and using locally certified cooling\/heating\nappliances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “We strongly advise installing toxic gases detectors\nand never using equipment that may cause fires in closed places such as essence\nor coal burners, and not stay in an idle vehicle in a garage or other enclosed\nstructure for a long period.” Al Falasi explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He also pointed out that the campaign\ntargeted labour accommodations in three areas: Jebel Ali, Al Qouz, and Al\nQusais.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n “More than 2000 awareness bags were distributed among\nlabours, containing winter supplies and awareness brochures in English and\nUrdu,” Al Falasi added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Silent Killer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Ibtisam Abd Al Rahman Al Abdouli,\nPoisons Senior Expert and director of the Specialized Forensic Evidence\nDepartment at the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology at\nDubai Police, said carbon monoxide (CO) is a ‘silent killer’ because it is a\ncolourless, odourless, and tasteless gas, and can be accidentally inhaled\nwithout it realizing.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Some people may experience minor symptoms such as\nheadache, weakness, dizziness, nausea or vomiting,” “But when the CO\nlevel in the body is high, it could lead to loss of consciousness and\neventually death,” she explained.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n Al Abdouli explained that CO is a toxic\ngas produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing fuels, such as\ngasoline, natural gas, oil, coal, and wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “When a fire burns in enclosed places, including wood\ncaravan houses and road trip vans, the oxygen is gradually replaced with carbon\nmonoxide.
