{"id":4459,"date":"2018-09-28T11:14:44","date_gmt":"2018-09-28T07:14:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uaebarq.ae\/en\/?p=4459"},"modified":"2018-09-28T11:14:44","modified_gmt":"2018-09-28T07:14:44","slug":"boeing-737-crashes-into-sea-off-pacific-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uaebarq.ae\/en\/2018\/09\/28\/boeing-737-crashes-into-sea-off-pacific-island\/","title":{"rendered":"Boeing 737 crashes into sea off Pacific island"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>A Boeing 737 aircraft carrying 47<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>people crashed into the sea off a small island in Micronesia Friday after the pilot missed the runway while attempting to land.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\">Air Niugini Flight 72 was due to touch down Friday at the international airport on Weno, the main island of Chuuk state, Micronesia, but &#8220;landed short of the runway,&#8221; according to a statement from Air Niugini, the national carrier of Papua New Guinea.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\">Bill Jaynes, managing editor of a Micronesia-based newspaper, was on the plane when it hit the water. &#8220;It&#8217;s just surreal. I thought we landed hard until I looked over and saw a hole in the side of the plane and water was coming in, and I thought, well, this is not, like the way it&#8217;s supposed to happen,&#8221; he said in a\u00a0video posted to Facebook.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Jaynes said passengers on the plane were in water up to their waists and used the emergency exit to escape.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-4460\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uaebarq.ae\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Capture-17-300x265.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"342\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uaebarq.ae\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Capture-17-300x265.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uaebarq.ae\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Capture-17.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Photographs and video footage posted online showed small fishing boats surrounding the stricken, semi-submerged plane, ferrying passengers to safety.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__read-all\">\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">James Yaingeluo, one of the first responders to arrive at the scene, said the plane landed more than 500 meters short of the runway.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">&#8220;Luckily, it happened during the daytime,&#8221; he said. &#8220;When the plane came to a stop all the civilian boats came to help transport passengers to dry land.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">&#8220;Once the doors opened everybody fought to get out,&#8221; he added. &#8220;All the passengers were scared and in shock.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Air Niugini confirmed that all on board &#8212; 35 passengers and 12 crew members &#8212; were able to safely evacuate the aircraft. &#8220;The airline is making all efforts to ensure the safety and immediate needs of our passengers and crew,&#8221; it added.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The airline said it had received reports that &#8220;the weather was very poor with heavy rain and reduced visibility at the time of incident.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Passengers and crew were taken to hospital for checks and no serious injuries were reported.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>CNN<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Boeing 737 aircraft carrying 47\u00a0people crashed into the sea off a small island in Micronesia Friday after the pilot missed the runway while attempting to land.
