After logging was banned, it lived on as the only passenger train to ride up the mountains.<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">Today, it remains one of the world&#8217;s most historic and beautiful mountain railways.<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">Running between Chiayi city at an elevation of 30 meters (98.4 feet) to Chushan at 2,451 meters (8,041 feet) &#8212; the highest train station in Taiwan &#8212; the Alishan Forest Railway offers diverse natural scenery.<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">It&#8217;s the highest narrow-gauge mountain railway in Asia &#8212; higher than the famed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, which ascends from 100 meters to 2,200 meters.<\/div>\n<div class=\"CaptionedImage__component\">\n<div class=\"Image__component CaptionedImage__image Image__isLoaded Image__hasAspectRatio\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/dynaimage.cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/q_auto,w_634,c_fill,g_auto,h_357,ar_16:9\/http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.cnn.com%2Fcnnnext%2Fdam%2Fassets%2F180914001849-alishan-railway-captainimg-3966.jpg\" alt=\"Alishan Railway \" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"erd_scroll_detection_container erd_scroll_detection_container_animation_active\">\n<div class=\"erd_scroll_detection_container\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"erd_scroll_detection_container\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"CaptionedImage__caption\">The railway was first built by the Japanese government to transport Taiwan cypress logs.<\/div>\n<div class=\"CaptionedImage__credit\">courtesy Liao Yuan-chiao<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\">Best of all, many aspects of Alishan rail network remain as they were 100 years ago.
