{"id":3719,"date":"2018-08-30T11:21:09","date_gmt":"2018-08-30T07:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uaebarq.ae\/en\/?p=3719"},"modified":"2018-08-30T11:21:09","modified_gmt":"2018-08-30T07:21:09","slug":"donald-trump-accuses-google-and-twitter-of-left-wing-bias-that-may-not-be-legal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uaebarq.ae\/en\/2018\/08\/30\/donald-trump-accuses-google-and-twitter-of-left-wing-bias-that-may-not-be-legal\/","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump accuses Google and Twitter of left-wing bias that &#8216;may not be legal&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Donald Trump has suggested Google, Twitter and Facebook may be breaking the law by favouring left-wing views.<\/p>\n<p>The president said the White House was \u201cgoing to see\u201d whether the companies needed to be regulated, as he continued his attack on Silicon Valley.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump also claimed that he was losing social media followers because of an anti-Republican bias.<\/p>\n<p>Later, he claimed that Google had promoted Barack Obama&#8217;s state of the union address on its homepage but refused to show his, which Google denied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not right, it\u2019s not fair, it may not be legal, but we\u2019ll see, we just want fairness,\u201d Mr Trump told reporters at the White House. \u201cI think it\u2019s a very serious problem, because they\u2019re really trying to silence a very large part of this country, and those people don\u2019t want to be silenced.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component  \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">W<\/span>hen asked if he wanted the companies to be regulated, he said: \u201cWe\u2019re just going to see. You know what we want? Not regulation, we want fairness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president, who often uses social media to make statements, said he had \u201cpersonal experience\u201d of left-wing bias. \u201cAll of a sudden you lose people and you say \u2018Where did they go? They\u2019ve taken off&#8217;,\u201d he said<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component  \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">M<\/span>r Trump is believed to be referring to a recent Twitter change that removed millions of suspended fake accounts from users\u2019 follower numbers. Although the change affected many Twitter users, the\u00a0president lost more than 300,000 followers.<\/p>\n<p>In a tweet after the news conference, Mr Trump shared a video on Twitter claiming Google was biased, because it had repeatedly shared Barack Obama\u2019s State of The Union addresses on its homepage, but had not done the same for him.<\/p>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component  \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">T<\/span>he video claimed that the Google homepage provided a link to Mr Obama\u2019s speech each year between 2012 and 2016, but had not done so for Mr Trump in 2017 or 2018. Google said it had shown Mr Trump&#8217;s speech in January of this year, and had not shown his speech in February 2017 as it was not an official State of the Union address.<\/p>\n<p>A Google spokesman said: &#8220;On January 30 2018, we highlighted the livestream of President Trump\u2019s State of the Union on the\u00a0google.com homepage. We have historically not promoted the first address to Congress by a new President, which is technically not a State of the Union address.\u00a0 As a result, we didn\u2019t include a promotion on\u00a0google.com\u00a0for this address in either 2009 or 2017.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component  \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">T<\/span>he president tweeted the video along with the hashtag #StopTheBias, which has been used by several Republican members of Congress to suggest social media companies favour left-wing views, and \u201cpinned\u201d the tweet to the top of his profile.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">M<\/span>r Trump\u2019s latest comments come the day after\u00a0he accused Google of being \u201crigged\u201d\u00a0and claimed 96 percent of news articles in search results were from left-wing sources.
