The Ministry of Health and\nPrevention (MoHAP) has recently launched an awareness campaign on the dangers\nof obesity, chronic diseases and its association with Covid-19 to highlight the\nimportance of public adherence to precautionary measures, healthy balanced diet\nand treatment plans set by doctors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The recently launched\ncampaign comes in line with the ministry\u2019s strategy aimed at strengthening\nnational efforts and protecting the health and safety of everyone while combating\nthe Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ministry affirmed that\nthe health sector in the country adopts a flexible and multi-pronged strategy\nto create a healthy environment free from Covid-19 complications and\nrepercussions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The campaign comes at a time\nwhen many global reports and studies concluded that people with obesity and\nchronic diseases including cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory\ndiseases, diabetes and cancer are more susceptible to contracting the virus and\nbe affected by its complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Therefore, the intake of Covid-19 vaccine by\nthese groups will greatly protect them from getting infected with the virus and\nwould certainly alleviate its symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSince the early days of the\npandemic, the ministry has paid special attention to obese patients and those\nwith chronic diseases and has accordingly assigned them special healthcare.\nThey have been given priority in lab and home testing to limit their contact with\nothers in health centres and are among the priority groups in receiving the\nCovid-19 jabs,\u201d said HE Dr Hussein Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant\nUndersecretary of Health Centers and Clinics Sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe severity of COVID-19\nincreases if the infected person is over 60. People with one or more of these\nchronic conditions such as asthma and lung disease, cardiovascular problems,\nuncontrolled diabetes, severe obesity, a weakened immune system due to diseases\nsuch as HIV or who are undergoing cancer treatment must be more careful to\nprotect themselves against the virus,\u201d Al Rand added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For her part, Dr Fadila\nMohammed Sharif, Director of Health Education and Promotion,\nstressed that the campaign calls on people with\nchronic diseases and obesity to get vaccinated at health centres available across\nthe country to immunize their bodies and protect their loved ones and continue\nfollowing a healthy lifestyle that can help improve the functioning of their\nbodies, including the immune system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Sharif advised those patients\nto continue taking medications, follow medical advice, and ensure that medication\nis available for at least a month or more, and stay no less than two meters\naway from people who are coughing or suffering from cold or flu. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She urged them to monitor blood\nsugar levels and blood pressure, wash their hands constantly with soap and\nwater, take care of their mental health, stay in contact with relatives safely,\nand take extra precautions when leaving the house by wearing masks and gloves, keeping\na safe distance, and communicating with medical staff when needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Fadila pointed out that\noverweight individuals are at greater health risk during the Covid-19 pandemic.\nStatistics showed that obesity triples the risks of hospitalization in case of\ninfection, as obesity is associated with weak immunity and reduces lung\ncapacity, making it difficult to breathe. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
