The decomposed remains were found at sea,\nand experts of the General Department of Forensics and Criminology at Dubai\nPolice have successfully utilised forensic 3D facial reconstruction\ntechnologies to help update the case of unidentified human remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A Challenging Case <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Major General Dr Ahmed Eid Al-Mansoori,\nDirector of the General Department of Forensic Evidence and Criminology, said\nreconstructing the deceased\u2019s face was very challenging as the body was almost\ncompletely decomposed, especially in the face whose features and lines had disappeared.\n\u201cAn elite team of coroners, digital forensics experts, and professionals from\nthe General Department of Artificial Intelligence at Dubai Police worked\ntirelessly to compile an identikit of deceased using the latest technologies in\ndigital facial reconstruction” he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Al-Mansoori further affirmed that the\nDepartment, under the directives of Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al\nMarri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, and the follow-up of Major General\nKhalil Ibrahim Al Mansoori, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Criminal\nInvestigation Affairs, has always been keen to apply the latest technologies\nand techniques to help solve cases and uncover mysteries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n No DNA, No Fingerprints <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Brigadier Ahmed Matar Al Muhairi, Deputy\nDirector of the General Department of Forensics and Criminology, confirmed that\nthe digitally generated image is the result of great efforts exerted by Dubai\nPolice\u2019s experts who examined the decomposed body which was found about a month\nago. \u201cThe remains were severely decomposed due to climatic conditions and\ncorpse erosion as a result of its direct exposure to marine organisms,\u201d he\nexplained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Brigadier Al Muhairi pointed out that\nidentifying the man was extremely difficult as there was not match to the\ndeceased\u2019s DNA in the Department\u2019s database. He added that the absence of\nfingerprints due to their decomposition and damage required innovative and\nsmart solutions. \u201cForensic experts started with the collected vital data, and\ndiscussed with their counterparts at the Digital Forensic Evidence Department\nconstructing a three-dimensional image of the deceased to help members of the\npublic identity the remains,\u201d he noted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Anthropology Report<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Dr Yunus Al-Balooshi, a forensic\nconsultant at Dubai Police, explained that they faced several challenges in\nidentifying the deceased and analysing his decomposed remains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt was very difficult to determine the\nperson\u2019s skin colour and tone as the body\u2019s pigments had disappeared for it had\nbeen in the water for a long time,\u201d \u201cNevertheless, our forensic experts were\nable, through specialized tests, to determine that the deceased had moderately\npigmented brown skin similar to Asians and middle easterners,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Al-Balooshi pointed out that, during the\nsecond stage, they worked to verify the hair colour and length, and they were\nable to verify this through a single hair left in the body after the\ndecomposition. \u201cWe conducted a number of specialized forensic examinations on\nthat single hair, and we confirmed that the deceased had thick hair and around\n3cm in length,\u201d Al-Balooshi revealed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n He added that they then determined the\nage-at-death through the use of osteopathy and pelvic osteometry, which is\nbetween 35 to 45. Al-Balooshi indicated that this type of examination always\ncontributes to narrowing the search for potential missing persons by\ndetermining the approximate age group. <\/p>\n\n\n\n He pointed out that after that, experts\nconducted an examination of the skull to verify its type, shape and size, and\nthe results confirmed that it is also for an Asian individual close to the\nMiddle East region. \u201cWe also analysed the skin thickness, eye colour and other\nnecessary vital information and forwarded the thorough anthropology\nreport to the Visual Evidence Analysis Department\nfor further investigations,\u201d Al-Balooshi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Visual Evidence <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Major Dr Hamad Al-Awar, Head of the\nVisual Evidence Analysis Department, said \u201cUpon receiving the anthropology\nreport, we initiated the process of digitally reconstructing the face by taking\nan x-ray image, and performing a three-dimensional scan of the head area and\nskull.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n He added that the Department worked in\ncooperation with the Virtual Training Centre in the General Department of\nArtificial Intelligence to use 3D scanning techniques and a special 3D drawing\nprogram, with the aim of obtaining a digital restoration of the face and\ngenerate an approximate image of the deceased to help investigators solve the\ncase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Al-Awar concluded that the digital\nfacial reconstruction, which Dubai Police has been using since 2007, is used\nwhen all scientific and traditional means of identifying the deceased\u2019s\nidentity reach a dead-end.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The Dubai Police are seeking public assistance in identifying the man in the digitally reconstructed picture.
