{"id":2783,"date":"2018-07-19T11:35:38","date_gmt":"2018-07-19T07:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uaebarq.ae\/en\/?p=2783"},"modified":"2018-07-19T11:35:38","modified_gmt":"2018-07-19T07:35:38","slug":"eu-fines-google-record-3-9bn-for-illegal-android-deals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uaebarq.ae\/en\/2018\/07\/19\/eu-fines-google-record-3-9bn-for-illegal-android-deals\/","title":{"rendered":"EU fines Google record \u00a33.9bn for illegal Android deals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The EU has opened a new front in its increasingly bitter war with Silicon Valley by hitting Google with a record-breaking monopoly abuse fine.<\/p>\n<p>Margrethe Vestager, the European competition chief, ordered the American internet giant to pay a \u20ac4.34bn (\u00a33.9bn) penalty after finding it had illegally bound smartphone manufacturers to deals that forced them to install Google apps.<\/p>\n<p data-mediaconductor-processed=\"true\">It is the second multi-billion euro fine Brussels has ordered Google to pay in little more than a year, and provoked outrage in the technology industry.<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s chief executive Sundar Pichai warned that the decision \u201csent a troubling signal\u201d that could lead to the company charging for its Android software.<\/p>\n<p>The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a Washington-based group that represents major technology companies,\u00a0attacked the fine as \u201cmisguided and shortsighted\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The fine] merely fills European coffers at the expense of American companies,\u201d said the ITIF\u2019s Daniel Castro. He added that \u201cit is time for European regulators to reset their approach to competition policy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter\">T<\/span>he European Commission has spent three years investigating claims that Android\u2019s dominance helps Google crush rival search engines and competitors to its Chrome web browser.<\/p>\n<p>Almost 80pc of the hundreds of millions of smartphones sold in Europe, which are made by manufacturers including Samsung, LG and Huawei,\u00a0run on Android<\/p>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component  \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">G<\/span>oogle develops the software and gives it away for free, but binds phone makers to strict conditions that ensure the vast majority of Android phones come loaded with Google\u2019s own apps including its dominant search service.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component  \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">M<\/span>s Vestager accused Google of using Android as a \u201cvehicle to cement the dominance of its search engine\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese practices have denied rivals the chance to innovate and compete on the merits. They have denied European consumers the benefits of effective competition in the important mobile sphere\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Vestager, who has also demanded that Amazon, Apple and Facebook pay fines or unpaid taxes in recent years, denied that Brussels was targeting US companies. \u201cI very much like the US,\u201d she insisted. \u201cThis has nothing to do with how I feel. Nothing whatsoever\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component  \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">B<\/span>ut France applauded the fine, calling it an \u201cexcellent decision\u201d. A French government spokesman said: \u201cNo-one is above the laws that have been laid down in common for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EU has fought an eight-year battle with Google that has resulted in two major fines for the company, with one investigation still open.\u00a0Last year it ordered the company to pay \u20ac2.4bn\u00a0for using the dominance of its search engine to promote its internet shopping service. A third case, into the company\u2019s online advertising network, is expected to result in another financial penalty.<time class=\"dt-updated\" title=\"Time posted: July 18, 2018 12:28:18 (UTC)\" datetime=\"2018-07-18T12:28:18+0000\"><\/time><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component  \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">A<\/span>s well as the fine, Ms Vestager gave Google 90 days to break the contracts that lead phone manufacturers to install its apps.
