Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a\ncontract with Careem whereby the latter will operate 3,500 bicycles across 350\nsmart docking stations in Dubai. The service marks the first bicycle-pool\nphased program of its kind in the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
HE Mattar Al Tayer,\nDirector-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA,\nsigned on behalf of RTA; and Mudassir Sheikha, Co-Founder and CEO of Careem,\nsigned on behalf of Careem. The signing was attended by several top executives\nof RTA and Careem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the agreement,\nthe Middle East\u2019s leading technology firm Careem will operate 1750 bikes and\ninstall 175 stations during the first two years of the contract, which runs for\n15 years. In the following five years,\nthe operation will grow to 3500 bikes and 350 docking stations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Careem will use a smart system to track bicycles,\npredict high occupancy areas, and connect all bicycles through GPS. It will\nimplement environmental sustainability methods through operating solar-powered\nbicycle racks and connecting them to a wireless network. Customers can hire and\npay for bike rides through Careem Bike app. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The service covers several\nDubai hotspots such as the Marina, Jumeirah, Dubai Water Canal, Deira, Al\nKhawaneej and Al Qudra. It will also be available at safe roads of four\ndistricts namely Al Qusais, Al Mankhoul, Al Karama, and Al Barsha. The speed\nlimit on dedicated cycling lanes or safe roads is fixed at 40 kph; which is\nsafe for bikers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bikes are offered for use in a\nvariety of options ranging from daily to annual use at affordable rates,\nwhether being regular or pedal-assisted bikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis agreement is made in\nimplementation of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al\nMaktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and\nHis Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown\nPrince, Chairman of the Executive Council, and Chairman of Dubai Sports\nCouncil, to provide suitable options to encourage residents, tourists and\ncycling amateurs to practice cycling,\u201d said Al Tayer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt helps people to pursue an\nactive lifestyle and enhance mobility options. It also contributes to RTA\u2019s\nefforts to enhance the integration of different transit modes and provide\nsolutions for the First and Last-Mile challenge enabling public transport\nriders to reach their final destinations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOver the past years, RTA had\nconstructed cycling tracks extending 274 km in several places like Saih\nAssalam, Bab Ashams, Al Qudra, Mushrif, Mirdif, Al Khawaneej and Dubai Water\nCanal as well as several streets such as Jumeirah, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al\nSaud, Al Mankhool Streets. The total length of cycling tracks in Dubai is\nexpected to reach about 631.7 km by 2023,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Al Tayer hailed the\ncooperation with Careem in delivering services that make Dubai a pioneer\nbike-sharing destination offering an important mobility pattern for residents\nand tourists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
